What began as a seemingly simple renovation quickly morphed into a full-scale design build project. The success of this project was possible due to a collaboration between the clients that were both quality driven and design-focused.
Often the most challenging projects come in the form of renovations for several reasons. In the case of this existing home, having been renovated numerous times over its lifespan, each previous intervention had its own architectural language. The result is a collection of pieces that worked against each other.
Our task became, how do we combine these seemingly separate units into one cohesive design that meets the needs of the client? So as a collective team, we looked at the project as a whole through a collaborative design process through drawings, 3d visualizations, and physical mock-ups. Due to the scale and complexity of the project, it was completed in 3 phases, allowing the client to inhabit portions of the house during the summer months as construction progressed.
With most renovation projects, there are many unknowns as you begin to tear into the bones of an old home and this project was no exception. From dated mechanical systems to deficient framing, these are all issues that need to be addressed to ensure the best possible outcome.
The completed project is a medley of traditional New England shingle style on the exterior with a more modern touch for the interior. The result is a spectacular summer retreat with room enough for the whole family.
